The launch of the S650 platform ushered in a new era of Mustang performance. For enthusiasts looking for reliable, record-breaking power, the VMP Performance Gen 6 supercharger upgrade is an easy button for performance.

The VMP Gen 6 3.0 L Supercharger kit has been designed to overcome the complexities of the Mustang’s dual-inlet design, delivering serious power gains while retaining factory-level drivability. But the question quickly becomes: Stage 1 or Stage 2 – which one is best for your build? We installed our Stage 1 and Stage 2 packages on a pair of 2024 Mustang Dark Horse models and ran them on our dyno to help you decide.

Stage 1: Reliability Meets Performance

The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse already produces 500 hp stock, but once you account for drivetrain losses and measure power at the wheels, it puts out a slightly lower 413 hp. Still impressive, but our Stage 1 Kit is a perfect performance-enhancing solution designed for the modder who wants a significant power boost without sacrificing daily drivability or peace of mind:

  • Power Improvement: Increases power from 413 rwhp to 701 rwhp.
  • Torque Improvement: Pushes torque from 377 lb-ft to 591 lb-ft with a flat curve for immediate throttle response.
  • Kit Highlights: 92 mm GT500 throttle body, 3.875 in pulley, upgraded air filters, and Stage 1 specific calibration.

The VMP Gen 6 3.0 L Supercharger Stage 1 Kit utilizes a 92 mm round throttle body sourced from the Shelby GT500, ensuring OEM-level reliability and smooth tuning. This stage is particularly attractive to those seeking factory-like security, and an optional powertrain warranty is available with this kit for a separate fee.

While the Stage 1 kit features a slightly more conservative rev limit of 7,500 rpm, it transforms the Mustang into a true 700+ horsepower machine. And that’s rear-wheel horsepower, which translates to well over 800-hp when measured at the crank.

Stage 2: Unleashing the Beast

For those demanding maximum performance, the Stage 2 Kit pushes the 3.0 L head unit to its full potential. The defining difference is the massive 112 mm billet round single-blade throttle body and a smaller 3.75in pulley. These components allow the supercharger to breathe more freely and generate roughly one additional pound of boost.

  • Power Improvement: Increases power from 413 rwhp to 761 rwhp.
  • Torque Improvement: Peak torque goes from 377 lb-ft to 586 lb-ft.
  • Kit Highlights: 112 mm Billet throttle body, 3.75 in pulley, and high-rpm aggressive calibration.

The Stage 2 calibration is more aggressive, moving the rev limiter to 7,800 rpm. This allows for a staggering 760+ rear-wheel horsepower output and superior high-end pull. It also offers the best bang-for-your-buck value as the price difference over the Stage 1 kit is less than $1k.

Choosing the Right Path for Your S650

Deciding which supercharger kit to go with depends on your ultimate goals for the build. If you use your Mustang as a high-performance daily driver and want the added peace of mind of a warranty, Stage 1 is the go-to choice. It offers incredible gains that will make every drive an event to remember.
