Performance tuning has evolved from a mechanical dark art into a digital science. If you want to unlock your vehicle’s hidden potential without spending days at a dyno shop, Email Tunes (or E-tunes) are the modern solution. Read along and we’ll take you through the journey from physical chips to high-speed data logs sent straight to your inbox.
A Brief History Of Vehicle Chip Tuning

Before cars began using complex electronic systems to improve performance and efficiency, gains were achieved through simple mechanical adjustments. Larger carburetors, more aggressive cams, and a freer-flowing exhaust were all it took to achieve meaningful gains.
As vehicles became more advanced with tech such as electronic fuel injection, variable cam and valve timing, and cylinder deactivation, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) became the brain that coordinated it all.
In the ’90s, chip tuning became the standard. This involved replacing a memory chip in the ECU with a preprogrammed chip to modify fuel and timing maps. Other solutions involved adding a ‘Piggyback’ system that sent altered signals to the ECU. With the advent of OBD-II ports in 1996, flash tuning became popular. This method overwrote the existing map in the factory ECU, making it less invasive and (usually) reversible. Flash tuning, or remapping, has evolved over time, and now the modern way to optimize your vehicle’s performance is email performance tuning.
“Performance tuning has shifted from the hardware of the 90s to the sophisticated software-driven calibrations of today.“
An email tune is a custom calibration delivered remotely via email. Unlike a canned tune – which is a generic, one-size-fits-all file preloaded on a device – a remote email performance tune is tailored to your specific vehicle and modifications. It bridges the gap between a basic flash and a full in-person dyno session.
How Email Performance Tuning Works

You receive a base file and upload it to your car via an OBD-II tuner. You record ‘data logs’ while driving and email those logs back to a professional calibrator. Updated files are sent back to you, and you repeat the process until the required results are met. Because each email performance tune is tailored to a specific vehicle, it is ideal for enthusiasts with stock cars, bolt-on mods, forced induction, or even engine swaps.
Email tunes are also far more convenient than dropping your car off at a tuner for days or weeks. You can also get the tuning just right, as the data files will log your personal driving data rather than relying on generic information.
“Email Tuning offers the precision of a professional calibrator with the convenience of remote, digital delivery.”
Check out the videos above for a walk-through of the data logging process with our HP Tuners RTD interface and the SXT S4 Tuner. Typically speaking, what you’ll need for a successful email tune is:
- A desktop computer or laptop
- Datalogging software
- An OBD-II interface such as the SCT X4 or HP Tuners MVP 14
- The original USD and OBD-II (or other) cables you received with your device
How VMP Performance Does Email Tunes

VMP Performance has refined the remote tuning process into a professional science. Using your OBD-II interface, we turn your laptop into a direct link to our expert calibrators. The VMP process delivers real-world results thanks to a thorough process that uses individual data logs optimized by professional tuners. The VMP Email Tuning process provides:
- Data Logging: Using software like LiveLink Gen 2, users record critical parameters such as RPM, spark advance, and knock sensor activity.
- Custom Levels:Â We offer tiered tuning, from Level 1 for naturally aspirated cars to Level X for extreme engine swaps and race builds.
- Expert Review: A calibrator analyzes your specific data logs and optimizes the parameters to ensure the car is making the power it should while maintaining safety and drivability.
The VMP process is superior because it relies on real-world data, allowing for fine-tuned adjustments to spark and manifold charge temps that generic tunes can’t match. The data log doesn’t lie; it allows us to see exactly how your engine is reacting to every adjustment in real-time.
